Triangle Off-Road Cyclists (TORC) is a volunteer organization dedicated to ensuring the future of mountain biking in the Triangle area of North Carolina through the promotion of responsible riding, establishment and maintenance of mountain biking trails, and preservation of North Carolina’s natural resources. TORC extends a warm welcome to everybody who is interested in mountain biking. We offer group rides, clinics and events to accommodate people with different skill levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. In cooperation with our partners and land managers, TORC members help maintain some of the premier trails in the Triangle area and join together in advocating for new trails. As an extension of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA), TORC also assists with rides, festivals, and the advancement of off-road cycling throughout the Southeastern United States.
Did you know that TORC volunteers help maintain trails in 12 locations around the Triangle area? These trails are used not only by mountain bikers but by:
TORC doesn't have a set of tools for each trail system in the Triangle Area so moving the tools we have around is inefficient. If we had more sets of tools, our volunteers could get out to the trails quicker to do much needed maintenance after rainy periods like we've had for months. This helps the trails open sooner after rain storms so EVERYONE can get back outside and enjoy them. Plus, having more sets of tools means we can build more trails!

Our volunteers, aka #DIRTHEROES, can tell you more about how they are used on the trails.
Hi there! I'm Mcleod!
They call me the “Holy Grail” of trail building. Some folks know me from firefighting. I’m good at scraping, cutting small roots, and removing debris from the trail surface. I’m also used for packing and shaping.
Yo! Pulaski here!
I’ve got an axe blade on one side and a hoe on the other - so man, I am VERSATILE, if I do say so myself. I can break dirt, cut roots and stumps and carve out some cool trail features. You DEFINITELY want me out there on the trail!
Tamp! Tamp! Tamp! I'm Tamper.
I carry my weight out there when trail building gets rough and I am used to get everything nice and smooth! I may not be needed for all tamping but there are times that I do come in handy for the heavy lifting (er... tamping).
Fire Rake at your service!
My triangular teeth are EXTREMELY SHARP so please be careful handling me. I am lightweight and easy to carry around. I am good at clearing the trail of small brush, grasses and weeds. My handle is long, too so that’s helpful getting into those hard-to-reach areas.
Greetings! I'm Mattock.
Ole’ Pulaski over there is bragging about his axe head on one side but wow, take a look at my pick-axe side with a larger hoe on the other end. I can loosen up hard ground and then scoop it out - all by myself! (Well, the #dirthero may be of some help, to be honest...)
Loppers to the Rescue!
I’m just one type of lopper used to trim branches and limbs that hang over the trail and WHOP you in the helmet. Yes, HELMET, not HEAD. If you are on your bike on the trails, your helmet better be on your noggin! Helmets are required!!
Joe Shovel here to help!
Yes, I’m just a regular shovel but a lot of these fancy tools aren’t as versatile as I am. Pointy or flat - both useful! I move dirt quickly and dig holes when needed. And best of all, nearly all #dirtheroes already know how to use me efficiently!
Rakish and Debonair! I'm Rake.
Okay - maybe that’s a stretch but I am popular with the #dirtheroes because I’m easy to use on various surfaces (eg, dirt, gravel, grit). There are a lot of types of rakes and each one serves its purpose so having a variety on hand is a good idea!
